Yes, it’s the Year of the Horse, again...

Just the word:
HORSE…

As a girl, I was a great fan of
Roy Rogers and his ever-present Trigger.
Oh, how crushed was I when I overhead
Aunt Mary say to Aunt Florence,
"I don't know what she sees in that Roy Rogers.
"His eyes are too small and he's
"Not handsome at all."
So I didn't talk to her about him anymore.
But I did still talk about Trigger!
After all, horses were the
Main reason I liked cowboys.

As an adult, I learned that my mother
Never liked cowboy movies,
But when I was little…
And my father travelled...
She took me every week
To see Roy and Trigger.
And Dale and Buttermilk.
And Gene and Champion.
And Hop-A-Long and Silver.
She even named her little
Willys Jeep car Nellie Belle
In honour of my enjoyment
Of these western forays.

Driving with my parents
We would seek white horses.
I learned to lick my thumb and
Place its wet spot on the palm
Of my other hand, then make
A fist and slap it quickly and loudly
Onto that same wet spot.
It was called "stamping white horses."
Do you know of this game?
There was no score kept…
Just spotting and stamping.

Once visiting my grandparents'
Little gas-station-cum-general-store
In Van Alstyne, Texas, I fell in love
With a clock in a horseshoe
Next to which stood a golden Trigger.
It was some kind of painted cast metal.
I don't know if the Horse Clock was
One of the items for sale... or a vague
Attempt at décor... but I was totally smitten.
And my grandparents, in the
Great tradition of all grandparents,
Gave. It. To. Me.
Again, the adult me knows
How this Horse Clock
Must have offended my mother's taste.
But I looooved it with all my heart.
Whenever we moved (which was often)
This same mother ensured
My Horse Clock took pride of place
Next to my bed where I could easily touch it
From my pillow.
Yes, I did learn to tell time
With that Horse Clock.

Other horses came over time.
On our frequent trips to Matamoros
And Nueva Laredo, my mother
Helped me find a photographer
In the zocolo who always had a
Wooden Horse for posing upon.
My childhood scrapbook is spattered
With these images showing me
As I grew. There are even a few
From my late teen years
In happy counterpoint.
My blind almost Godmother, Sammie,
Even prevailed upon my mother
One time to help her climb aboard
One such steed so she could
Send me her picture like mine of yore.

During fourth and sixth grades
We lived in tiny Bartonville, Texas,
And there pastured an aging
And gentle Sadie for a neighbour.
Sadie let me lead her to our fence
So I could climb from fence to her back
And explore our vast four acres
Bareback.
I fed her carrots that she
Delicately bit as I held them
And sugar cubes that she
Lipped from my open palm.
My mother, the city girl, later
Confessed her fears at the time.
I'm glad I didn't know.

When I was preggers with Peter
His dad and I visited friends
Who lived on a very remote ranch
In the mountains of northern Mexico.
One day, we rode our horses
For so many hours
Our hosts sent out cowboy
Search parties to find us...
To ensure our baby's safety.
Later, Peter and I rode horses
On a bridle path at Lake Louise.
He remembers the horses' names
Still.

Of course, Little Peter and Little Kate
Each had their own horse on springs.
I painted them white, because,
Like my mother, the aesthetic
Has always been more important to me
Than the commercial.
Peter called his horse "Wrong"
And Kate called hers "Mine."
They know why.

What's that other little horse
On the calendar?
The one in the middle?
I discovered it while looking
For something else
And kept it because
It's sweet.

Have a very happy
Year of the Fire Horse,
My friends.
...
In China it's known as a time for victories, unexpected adventure and surprising romance! The horse is associated with fire and therefore always ready to race on… during the Year of Horse, we must be careful not to let that fire consume any wood that might be around us. The lesson this year is to run, but to plan and to pace ourselves, to ensure we reach our ultimate goals.
...
In western astrology, Mercury will be going retrograde for the first time this year from Feb 25th to March 19th. Back up everything on all your devices about a week before. Double-check all your documents. Try to avoid entering into any new contract, but if you must, be prepared for delays. If you have an on-going contract negotiation, revisit areas you thought were settled… they might have become unstuck.
...
If all this sounds familiar, I confess to recycling this month’s offering, albeit a bit more teal-y this time. See my previous Year of the Horse calendar from 2014.

Feb 25

A fearless year of fresh starts...

Yes, the Lunar New Year
Came a bit early this year
But I’m on my regular schedule,
So please accept my
Well-wishes for this coming year
Even though they’re arriving
A few days late.
This snake is a
Blue Komodo Island Viper
AKA Trimeresurus Insularis...
Native to Komodo Island,
Indonesia.

Traditionally a Snake year
Is expected to be one
Of positive transformation
As people shed their old skins…
All negative energy from the past…
And slither into new beginnings.

...
Like many in my world
I never felt attracted to snakes.
In fact, because I loved all animals
As a girl and always
Stopped to pet them
On my way to and from school.
My mum was afraid I wouldn’t
Respect the danger
They represented, so
She asked my dad
To take me to the reptile house
At the San Antonio Zoo.
She couldn’t take me there herself
Because she was
Too afraid of snakes
To even look at them
Behind glass.
The purpose was to ensure
I knew what a snake was…
So she could teach me
To steer clear
And
TO BE AFRAID.
VERY AFRAID.

My mum spent the rest
Of my childhood
Sharing her
Abject horror of snakes.
And
The result was
A thoroughly ingrained
Fear that brought on
Screaming nightmares
From movies
And even pictures
In magazines.

...
Fast forward to 2015
When I med KC Blair
Of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The day we met he asked me,
“What are you afraid of?”
And I replied, without hesitation
“Snakes!”
“But,” I told him,
“I don’t encounter any snakes
“In my daily life, so
“All I have to do
“Is close my eyes in movies.
“It’s never been a hardship.”
And KC said
“Holding such a strong fear
“Can affect your health
“And wellbeing
“In unexpected ways.”

So KC offered to help
Rid me of this
Well-intentioned
But irrational fear
Using something called
Tapping.
No, not dancing this time.
He guided me through
A process where
I tapped my fingers
On specific places
On my hands and face.
It’s called Thought Field Therapy
And apparently
There are many adherents
Everywhere, everywhere.
Yes, it’s indeed
As woo-woo as it sounds.
He took me through
The short process twice.
And since that day in 2015
I have had no fear of snakes.
None at all.

Of course, I still don’t
Run into them in my daily life
But I can watch movies,
And see pictures
And even YouTube videos
And love how beautiful
And graceful
And colourful
They are.

...
People use tapping
For more than snakes.
Other fears, of course,
Like fear of flying
Or fear of water,
Plus
Anxiety, depression,
Pain…
The list goes on.
I’m guessing tapping
Probably works
On just about anything.
Also, it’s fast
And free.

I’ve put a little
How-to JPG here.
If you want to learn more
These are the two
Best-known books.

But my little JPG
Is truly enough.
You can always
Ask me...
You don’t have
To believe it.
You just notice
Over time that
Your old skin
Is gone
And your new one
Feels great

...
KC’s son told me
That KC passed
About three years ago.
I am saddened to hear…
But happy to be offering
This to you in his memory.
Happy New Year to us all!

Everything old is new again...

A few weeks ago, Kate and David
Joined friends in the Riviera Maya,
Just south of Cancun in Mexico…
For lots of sun, sand, tacos, tequila,
Tzereques, pisotes, iguanas,
Howler monkeys, peacocks, and
One very friendly cat.

Then…
A trip to the ruins of Tulum
The fort that the Mayans
Built as their coastal defence
Sometime before the 13th century…
And abandoned
At the end of the 16th century.
Yup she’s old,
But with the tourist development
In Cancun, Tulum is now back
On the beaten track…
Indeed she’s now her own destination.
Her splendour renewed
By all the attention, she sprawls aglow
In her own wonder.

Like Tulum, I, too, have become old…
OK less old in years, but still officially
People-y old.
And a few weeks before
My November b’day
I undertook an adventure
To renew my own splendour…
And now after lots
Of generous attention
From dentist Dr. Divya Patel
And the whole delightful staff
At Dr. Teodoro Happy Tsang’s
Main Street offices, I am
Proud to announce:
As of this past Monday
I have nine new teeth!!!
Here’s a pic.

The good news is
You can’t tell the diff…
But I certainly can.
Now I’m learning to eat again…
And
I’m learning to talk again, too.
I have quite a lisp
Which Dr. Patel says will
Gradually disappear.
In the meantime, remembering
Last month’s alliterative poem,
I’ve read the first stanza
Of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,
Both before and after
Installing the new teeth.
As benchmark, I’ll re-read
That same stanza each week…
Plus…
Throughout each day
I have little sessions where I say
RED LEATHER. YELLOW LEATHER.
Over and over and over again
Just like an eager actor warming up
For a big show.
Yes, I’m practising sprawling aglow, too,
In my own renewed wonder.

Me and Tulum.
There’s a lot to be said for simply
Lasting.

...
As usual this month’s calendar in higher-resolution form, lives here. In the same folder there is also a version without the RED LEATHER-YELLOW LEATHER line at the bottom, in case, like me, you’d rather spend this month with just Tulum’s unadulterated beauty on your desktop. In that same folder I’ve included the animals Kate and David encountered around their hotel... a couple of them are little movies!

Many happy returns... always...

If you are born in Toronto
At 9:15 am today, this is what your
Astrological natal chart will look like.
The sun is associated with
Your best expression of yourself.
In your chart the sun’s in Aquarius,
The sign associated with
The forming of community,
Of developing a path
To inclusion and universality…
In other words: common ground.
Plus, in your chart Aquarius
Occupies the second house,
The parts of your life
Concerned with your
Personal resources...
Whatever you need
For your own sustenance…
Like food, money,
And a rock solid
Sense of values.
Every year on your birthday…
Give or take a day or two
     Because: leap year…
The sun shows up
In the same place.
That’s what the ancients,
Like those famous
Three wise men,
Called your solar return.
That’s the real reason
People will wish you
Many happy returns.
The sun’s position is easy to know
Because the earth orbits
Around the sun every 365 days...
     Sort of… remember
     Leap year catches us up
     For those extra
     5 hours,
     59 minutes, and
     16 seconds each year.
The moon, of course,
And all the planets
Also have returns,
But their orbits around the sun
Take different amounts of time
So you’ll need to look it up
Or ask an astrologer,
The scientists of yore
Still plying our trade
In 2023.

...
Want to know what those symbols are on this month’s calendar? I have a keywords chart for you in this folder. You’ll see the sun and the moon are listed as planets. That’s just tradition talking. We know they’re not really planets. While you’re there, why not pick up the higher resolution version of my calendar and try it out as wallpaper on your computer desktop? That’s what I do
every month. (background photo by Cosmic Timetraveler on Unsplash)

Please enjoy this glorious and short month... hearts included.

Vibrant Colours Always Welcome...

By the time you hear from me next month
I will have my brand new eyes.
Cataracts will be
A Thing of the Past.

Until then I thrive
On vibrant colours...
Because so much of my world
Is just shades of grey.
And not even shades
That I can parse
And catalogue…
Just sort of mushy shades
Tinted with yellow.

So you can see
Why I so love these flowers
And others by my friend Kelley Doris.
Of course, I always love her flowers
But these days they offer me
A glimpse of clarity
In my mushy world.

You’ll see, of course. Kelley
Also has cats... including
A couple of black cats.
And these black cats are not
Mushy shades at all.
They are definitely black cat shapes
That sometimes sport yellow eyes…
Or maybe pink tongues.
There’s no subtly in black cat images…
Even sans cataracts.
They give me comfort these days…
And joy always.

...
What Kelley says about her flower pics:
  • Flowers have always been my muses—I feel like they're complete worlds of colour and beauty and emotion all in themselves. I always use the natural light from the window in my back door, against the one charcoal wall in my kitchen. Cloudy days are actually the best for my pics—it helps with the darker, moodier feel I adore. I'd say my goal is to be a modern Dutch master.
Kelley always ignites wonder and a vibrant celebration of being alive.

Get Ready to Celebrate the Year of the Metal Ox...

The Year of the Metal Ox is particularly focused on relationships of all kinds. The Ox is very hardworking and methodical. That means we can expect this to be a year when work will get rewarded. Prosperity is expected for those who put in consistent effort. This is going to be a year when we will fully feel the weight of our responsibilities, a year when it is necessary to double our efforts to accomplish anything at all.

This is considered to be a favourable year for economic recovery or consolidation, a year of long-term investments, especially for creating a reserve stock for any upcoming unproductive years. The Metal Ox year is particularly great for making order in the family life. Note, it's a year all about discipline and hard work. Think grasshopper and ant.

More passive ways we might attract luck include using specific colours. In addition to white, the lucky colours of the Ox are yellow and green. Colours that, in Feng Shui, attract prosperity and success. To increase your luck, wear metal accessories.

There are so very many rich traditions for this annual moon festival. Other Asian lands also celebrate, but here in the Americas, we have all become more aware of the Chinese celebration, even if we are unaware of many of the events.

First, there’s a deep breath, called Little Year, then 16 days of the Spring Festival, filled with visiting family and honouring people born under each of the 12 zodiac signs. Then it all culminates in the Lantern Festival.

Click here  to get a little doc I've prepared for you. It gives you the specific dates and their traditional activities and foods.

And speaking of FOOD!!! click!

Here are some things to do:

Please join me in wallowing in the riches of our world.

This year is going to be lucky and also perfect to focus on relationships, whether we are talking about friendships or love. In the Chinese Zodiac, the Ox is very hardworking and methodical. 2021 is going to be a year when work will get rewarded, and those zodiac signs who are lucky in terms of money this year will be the ones that will make a considerable effort. The Yin energy, specific to the Chinese zodiac sign of Ox, will be quite poignant. This is going to be a year when we will fully feel the weight of our responsibilities, a year when it is necessary to double our efforts to accomplish anything at all.

Should We Say Year of the Rat?  ...or the Mouse?
Yes, the Year of the Rat is what everyone sees, but a local shopkeeper who is Chinese, tells me she always says "Mouse." She explains, "It's like Mickey Mouse! So much more friendly."  Of course, the Year of the Rodent-of-Some-Kind is all about tenacity, but also about fertility. Fertile tenacity. Tenacious fertility.

Of course, from an astrological point of view, fertility is about creativity—all forms of creativity. What a great focus for the year!

The Chinese year is a lunar calendar, of course, with the New Year falling on the New Moon between Jan 21st and Feb 20th. I have recently started teaching people how to track the moon's phases. Of course, I use astrology as the base for observing today's phases compared to our personal astrological natal chart. I'm pretty excited about sharing my reflections with others.

Here I show you my New Moon to New Moon announcement along with Canada Post's 2020 Year of the Rat/Mouse stamps. The Year of the Rat marks the first in the 12-year cycle.
As the Canada Post site says:
  • As legend has it, the rat earned the primary position thanks to its cunning nature. According to one story, the Jade Emperor based the 12-year cycle on the order in which the animals arrived at the heavenly temple. The rat persuaded the tireless ox, which was sure to win, to carry it to the finish line. Just as the ox approached the temple, the rat jumped down and scurried ahead to take first place.
  • Designed by Albert Ng, O. Ont., and Seung Jai Paek, the stamps present the traditional story of the wedding of the rat’s daughter in the style of folk art known as Chinese farmer painting. The permanent domestic-rate stamp depicts the bride on her way to her nuptials, while the international-rate stamp shows the happily married couple.
  • “A merry wedding procession of rats is a common folk-art motif associated with the Chinese New Year,” explains Ng. “The snowy scene, reminiscent of Canada or northern China, joyfully captures the celebration of the wedding – and the coming new year.”
Whichever name you choose to call them, these gnawers are getting married in the highest style marking their hopes for a prosperous year—and a lifetime filled with joyous creative issue.

On that note, I wish each of you a fecund year of your own favourite definitions of creativity.

Canada Post is making me smile...

As is its wont, Canada Post has issued its annual stamp marking Chinese New Year. Their offering this year is adding lots of joyous smiles to my face—and my heart. Guess that's because St. Valentine's Day is conjoined, eh?

Beginning Feb 4th we're entering the Year of the Earth Pig. According to Chinese astrology, that means this is a great year to make money and a good year to invest! This year is going to be full of joy, a year of friendship and love for all the zodiac signs—an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success into all the spheres of life.

I found this little piggy pop-up card on a wikihow page.

Seems particularly appropriate for this month’s celebration, don't you think? They’ve included a file download for this white piggy, but I’ve adapted it to match my calendar’s red and patterned piggy.
Go grab my happy file (along with the instructions) from my DropBox here.

Be sure to send me a pic when you've made your own piggy pop-up card.

En-JOY, y'all!

Making the invisible visible...

Over the hols,
My balcony Buddha
Became enlightened
For all to see.

It might be blinding,
But NOW, like Neo,
He's finding
It's also binding...
He can't go back
To the not-knowing
Or the not-caring.

NOW, all he thought
He knew
Is new NOW...
And he's new NOW
With new purpose
And even new gravity...
NOW.

I say NOW,
But we all know
The original Buddha's
NOW was a very long time ago.
And still, it's NOW...

Because once we're
Blinded by the Light,
We're always all revved up
Like a deuce,
Another runner in the night...

Seeking.
Being.
Here.
NOW.
For all to see.
And mostly...

To see ourselves.

2016 Feb

Canada Post keeps making history...
too bad most of us have given up on snails.

No broken arm, I'm just late, but I'm including a little Valentine heart for everybody!

This Year of the Fire Monkey portends a time where anything can happen. This cheeky animal bursts with exuberance, bringing a lightening fast pace and fantastical motivation. The Monkey increases communication, humor and wit, helping us get through stressful times with grace and ease. Business flourishes and risks tend to pan out. The Monkey’s gift is the ability to find unconventional solutions to old problems. Daring to be different can lead to success.

Overall advice: be prepared to work hard and stand up for what you deserve.
...
and never, ever forget Vonnegut's request:

I urge you to please notice when you are happy,
And exclaim or murmur or think at some point,

"If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”

Yes! Another New Year!

Traditionally the Chinese observe the lunar year, which means the new year falls on a different calendar day each year. It's the second new moon after the winter solstice. The Chinese celebrate for 15 days with different activities designated for each day. Wikipedia has it all. This year's new moon arrives on Feb. 10th and is the actual day that the Dragon's year is usurped by the Year of the Snake.

Famous people born in the Year of the Snake include Muhammad Ali, Tony Blair, Bob Dylan, Henry Fonda, Mahatma Gandhi, Greta Garbo, Dizzy Gillespie, JFK, Carole King, Mao Zedong, Pablo Picasso, Oprah Winfrey, Virginia Woolf. Anne Rice, Ann-Margret,  Audrey Hepburn, Christie Brinkley, Elizabeth Hurley, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, Kim Basinger, Linda McCartney, Liv Tyler,  Queen Elizabeth I, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Jessica Parker, Art Garfunkel, Audrey Hepburn, Dean Martin, Dorothy Parker, Paul Simon, Ben Stiller, Charlie Sheen, Charles Darwin, Martha Stewart, Pierce Brosnon, President Abraham Lincoln, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Allen, and Grace Kelly.

In Western Astrology we see any new moon as an opportunity to unlock our dreams. This Feb 10th new moon is in Aquarius. It's focus will be on innovative ideas, the future, humanitarianism, revelations and surprises... all to include the big picture, humour and warm friendships. I invite you to prepare a New Moon Wish List on the evening of the10th.

Chinese New Year happens the second new moon after the winter solstice. It's that new moon time again: the year of the Black Water Dragon (that's a water dragon that's black, instead of a dragon that lives in black water). I thank Veer for this illustration. Go here to see Neil Gaiman's rendition.

All new moons give us the opportunity to renew our commitments to ourselves. Certainly this inventive Aquarius new moon bodes well for exciting new beginnings and enlivening breakthroughs. Surprising events await us and unexpected epiphanies that will come to us as a result of keeping our eyes wide open. Make this a month—and a year—to remember!

Chinese New Year 2011

February 3 finds a New Moon in Aquarius
and signals the Chinese New Year: Year of the Golden Rabbit

This year’s combination of metal as an earthly sign and the rabbit as a heavenly sign results in the year of the Golden Rabbit for the first time in 60 years. This Rabbit is associated with compassion, sensitivity and flexibility and is expected to bring stability -- sometimes through change.

The New Moon in Aquarius always reminds us to make a difference within our group and community networks.

And as every New Moon represents new beginnings, maybe you'd like start something new by making your own New Moon Wish. One of the most imaginative ways to understanding a New Moon is through creative intention setting, using a process known as New Moon Wishing. Jan Spiller coined this phrase in her book ‘New Moon Astrology’ (2001 Bantam). Some people keep a New Moon Wishes Journal.

The year of the Golden Rabbit seems like a good time to start mine.

Feb 2011

The days may be getting shorter...
but they're still long and dark and winter's fully entrenched. We've had snow and snow and tonight's forecast is for snow: the worst storm of the season. Every dark cold evening as I walk from the Jane Subway Station to my new west-end digs, I pass old landmarks from my past. One such is the Odeon Theatre. Built in 1948, it went dark about seven years ago. One night recently as I walked I discovered its new light: this new sign installed above the marquee. I stood across the street and rejoiced.

Look! It's been renamed in honour of the near-by river and it's slated to re-open soon. Maybe even this month???

The dark days of winter won't seem nearly so long with a near-by flick. See the Thai Classic Cuisine sign reflected in the Humber's window? Seems like a suggestion for a tasty combo. Stay tuned for more news as it happens.

The promise of spring
begins on the first day of winter...

Every year Leslie gives me an amaryllis and I name her Amy. I plant each Amy during the holidays and rejoice in her rapid and eager growth. This Amy is especially enthusiastic. She has already produced these four luscious blooms PLUS another shoot bearing their Siamese twins. Amy's promise of spring will be set in bold face and underlined as this second shoot waits for these blooms to fade then rushes in to replace them with four more.

Have a great month. For such a short one, there's a lot to celebrate including Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, Family Day, President's Day for those further south... and yes, Amy's strutting promise of spring.

The month that celebrates LOVE returns...
